SoYoung Inc just won a Totally Awesome Award for Most Awesome Dapper Diaper Bags. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!

SoYoung Inc

Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome Dapper Diaper Bags” – what do your customers value most about your business?
SoYoung Inc: People love the uniqueness of our products – the way they combine natural fabrics, minimal design and bold prints. I also think that the products remind them of those wonderful, everyday moments that they share with their children as they learn and grow.

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
SI: Most people don’t know that SoYoung is actually my Korean name. Also, I’m not your stereotypical “Alpha Mom” CEO. The process of running and growing SoYoung has forced me to overcome so many insecurities and self doubts. As much as I’d love to project supreme confidence, I’ve found that the best way for me to deal with my internal struggles is just to be upfront about them and stay open to receiving help and guidance from others.

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
SI: Part of it was just trying to meet my own need. I remember announcing to my husband that, despite having no prior experience, I was going to design a diaper bag that addressed all the shortcomings of what I saw in the market. The other motivating factor was to find a path that allowed me to escape an unfulfilling career in the financial industry and express myself creatively.

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
SI: Coffee. And then once I’m awake, water.

RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
SI: It’s always so amazing when people take the time to send thoughtful notes on how much they like their products. One woman emailed me once and said she had our red scooter lunchbox on her desk and made her feel happy just to look at it. That was awesome. And then, our local bank branch recommended our business as part of a widespread ad campaign, so our brand images were all over bus stops, social media and radio ads in Toronto.

RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
SI: My own inability to delegate – but I’m getting better.

RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
SI: I meditate every day and invite all of the staff to join me. That, and high intensity workouts, yoga, and seeing my girlfriends regularly keep me sane.

RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
SI: Connecting authentically with others. The relationships I’ve formed with other small business owners facing similar challenges have helped me get through my biggest challenges.

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
SI: 20% off – using discount code REDTRIKE (until May 1, 2017)
