Many parts of the country get a lot of snow. We’re talking five months of cold weather, sleet, ice and snow. In Michigan we have had snow in October and we have had snow in late April. So when you live here in the northern states you have two distinct choices when it comes to snow. You can learn to love it.

Or move.

35 years strong and I am still here living the dream in the north. I don’t know if I will ever truly be a fan of freezing cold winds and dark skies that grace us for half a year, but the snow and I have made peace. Here is why you should love the snow.



You know what is so great about stepping out into the fresh snow fall to shovel your driveway?  It is quiet.  Being surrounded by snow is still and silent, which is the exact opposite of what it sounds like in my home.  When the kids are driving me bonkers I will run for the shovel and relish in the peace that snowfalls bring.


Here in the northern states we live through six months of overcast darkness and our Vitamin D levels plummet to ground zero. Mine were so low last year I can’t believe I didn’t end up with rickets! Although I escaped rickets, I did end up with some unnerving symptoms. Getting outside in whatever sunshine there is and shoveling your driveway is a great way to load up on your daily D.


Burn Baby Buuuuuuurn!  Shoveling snow can burn up some serious calories. If you are like me your body takes a yearly winter hit in the weight gain department. Getting out and shoveling the snow can burn some calories as well as build up your mom guns! Just a half hour of shoveling can help a 120 pound woman burn 144 calories.


snow3Shoveling snow is something everyone can complain about together!  Nothing brings a family together in unison like forcing all of the children out in the snow to shovel the driveway. At least they are all in agreement that they would rather all be inside on their internet devices.

If shoveling is still not your thing no matter how hard I try and convince you, there are still great benefits to being outside in the wintertime.

Take a peaceful walk in the fresh powder.

Build a snowman with your kiddos, (they will be in awe of your awesome snow skills).

Watch your dog run around eating snow like it is the best thing he has ever seen in his entire dog life.

Go sledding (or watch your kids hurl themselves down dangerous hills while trying now not to pee your pants in fear for their safety).

Look for animal tracks with the kids in fresh snow.

And if you really, really, REALLY hate the snow and the cold still then just sit by the window and enjoy a cup of hot tea while staring at it’s beauty.
