In honor of Independence Day, we’ve taken a page from your kid’s classroom and rounded up the best spots in America for learning about the land of the free and the brave. From remembering the Alamo to California’s gold rush, here are nine places that will help you and your crew make a little history of your own.

Sutter’s Fort – Sacramento, Ca

Located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, Sutter’s Fort embodies the spirit of the pioneers that made their way west in search of gold and agricultural riches. Built in 1839, Sutter helped the survivors of the Donner Party make their way out of the mountains and it was one of Sutter’s workers that discovered gold in the American river, making the historic state park a pivotal part of California and American history. For more historical hot spots, check out Old Sacramento, the California State Capital and kid-fave California Railroad Museum.

Good to know: Admission is just $5 for adults and $3 for kids!
