Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “National Cool Kindie Music Artist” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Laurie Berkner Band:  I think – and hope – it’s that they like the music we make and how it brings their families together!

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
LBB: A lot of people know me (and the Laurie Berkner Band) for my work on Jack’s Big Music Show, my concerts and YouTube videos, but they may not know that I also try to partner with companies whose philosophies I like and whose business practices I respect, to create songs that help parents and kids. Like writing Pool Safely for the CPSC, One Seed in collaboration with the company Seventh Generation, and just recently, teaming up with Tom’s of Maine to create a song and video (Silly Brushing Song (Brush ‘Em Up)) that kids can brush their teeth to, which helps them stay at it for the full two minutes recommended by the ADA.

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
LBB: I began as a pre-school music teacher many years ago and wrote songs for the kids I was teaching. Over time I started to perform those songs in concerts for kids and loved it so much that I started a band and made it my career!

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
LBB: Water!

RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
LBB: Years ago, one mom made me a quilt where each patch represented one of my songs. It was so beautiful, thoughtful and touching. I still have it!

RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
LBB: Scheduling rehearsals!

RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
LBB: Exercise – and asking for help when I need it.

RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
LBB: The connection I feel with kids!

RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
LBB: As a parent: never listen to anyone else’s advice! Only YOU know what’s best for you and your family.

RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
LBB: As a business owner: Of course it’s a good idea to book that show in Chicago in the middle of winter.

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
LBB: Yes. This is a discount code for 20% off of our new album, Superhero, on our website REDTRICYCLE20.
