This Mom is Doing Nothing This Summer, and Loving It

What does it mean to be a “good mom” these days? Is it keeping kids ahead in school? Making sure they have lots of activities? What if you’re a working mom? Looking at her summer schedule with her daughters, Kristen Hewitt decided to try something different.

“I had big plans to be a ‘good mom’ this summer,” TV reporter/producer Hewitt wrote on Facebook. “There were going to be chore charts, reading goals, daily letter writing practice, and cursive classes. There would be no screen time until the beds were made, and planned activities for each day.”

Instead, they spent their first day lounging in their pajamas. They baked cookies, played with an art project and went swimming.

Hewitt realized they were all over-scheduled and tired. Trying to live up to social media’s prompts to “stay challenged” and “enrich” their lives involved mostly unrealistic expectations.

So, they’re planning nothing. No camps, classes or curricula. Hewitt is prioritizing healthy eating and exercise, freedom for her children to pick what they want to do, and going where the day takes them.

They may watch TV, get bored, read or do something spontaneous, like go to the pool. Whatever they do, it will be low pressure.

“So,” Hewitt wrote, “If you haven’t figured out what you’re doing this summer, you’re not alone. And guess what? It’s OK! Your kids will be fine and so will you.”
