This year, plan a vacation around one of nature’s most epic displays of power: a volcano. From splurge-worthy Hawaiian getaways to small-town California charm to a journey to the island of Sicily, click through the slideshow to learn about our favorite volcanoes to visit in real life. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawai’iLocated on the island of Hawai’i, this national park offers a network of trails and hikes, many of them fairly rigorous, with views of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Stop by one of the two visitor centers to plan your excursion: the Kīlauea Visitor Center is just inside the park’s edge and you’ll find rangers on duty from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily to help you decide which path is best to take that day, especially with the kiddos in tow. The Jaggar Museum is another three miles down the road and is open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and offers amazing views of the Kilauea Caldera and main crater Halema’uma’u. If you want to make your vacation beyond memorable, splurge on an overnight stay at the Volcano House, a 33 room historic guest house that includes dining, a bar, a gift shop and views of Kilauea. In addition to the guest house, they also manage 10 newly refurbished camper cabins and campsites in the nearby Nāmakanipaio Campground (a much more budget friendly option). Wei While we recognize that volcanoes make awesome destinations, we also acknowledge that they can be dangerous. Please use caution when planning your excursions and follow the info provided by locals for your family’s safety. Have you ever visited a volcano with the kids?
