Today, I went to my daughter’s public school, PS85Q, to see her sworn in as 5th grade representative for her school. During the ceremony, the 4th grade Peacemaker Committee and the 5th Grade Student Council gave a presentation on diversity.

We live in Queens, NY one of the most diverse areas in the United States. More specifically, Astoria where you see diversity every time you step outside your door…or for many people, right inside their door.
I had a moment of profound pride when the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and the Student Council stood at the front of the auditorium in clothing representing their various cultures. Greek, Chinese, Filipino, Muslim and Jewish cultures were represented by just these 5 young ladies on the Student Council.
This is America.
These are our future leaders. The girls who will help shape our world. They come from varying backgrounds and work together. They barely even notice the differences that others shine a spotlight on, yet they will happily celebrate them when they are pointed out.
We are incredibly fortunate to have them pledge their allegiance to the United States of America. I can’t wait to see what they accomplish.
