Serena Williams Didn’t Have a Birthday Party for Her Daughter for a Special Reason

Trending Now

During a recent press conference before the U.S. Open, tennis star Serena Williams talked about more than the sport. With her daughter Olympia having just turned 1, she revealed that her daughter wouldn’t have a birthday party. But why not? The reason is actually pretty important to Williams and her family.

Kids’ birthday parties are big business. Seriously. If you’ve ever booked a party for an entire third grade class of kiddos at an ice skating rink, bounce-and-jump play space or just about anywhere else, you know the pain (in your wallet) of these extravaganzas. But birthday parties aren’t for everyone.

Plenty of parents have their own values, ideas and beliefs about how they celebrate, or don’t celebrate, this day. When Williams was asked how she was celebrating her then-almost 1-year-old daughter’s birthday, she simply said, “Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays.” Williams also added, “We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that.” Traditionally, Jehovah’s Witnesses also don’t celebrate Easter, Christmas and other similar holidays.

The mommy to a soon-to-be toddler is not stranger to opening up about parenting. In a recent tweet, Williams shared an adorably funny anecdote about a flight home. It seems that little Olympia decided, like many tots, to run up and down the plane’s aisle. When she finally sat back down, she threw up all over Williams. Using the hashtag #ThisMama, Williams asked other moms to share their tales of motherhood. And they certainly did!
