Neighbors may have wondered why their lonely 94-year-old neighbor, Keith Davison, was putting a pool in his back yard — but they didn’t wonder for long, because the widower quickly let the whole neighborhood know that the pool was theirs to use.

Davison, a retired court judge, told a local NBC News affiliate that he had spent enough time being lonely and sad after his wife of 66 years died of cancer in 2016. He needed to get himself out of the silence that had spread through his home.

“You just can’t imagine what it’s like,” Davison said in the news report. “You cry a lot. That’s just the way it is, because she’s not here.”

With no public pool for the kids of the neighborhood to use, Davison knew if he installed a pool, his back yard could be a joyful community space. So he built a sparkling 32-foot long pool with a diving board and told neighbors it was a free-for-all.

“I knew they’d come,” he said in the news report.

Davison, who has three adult children but no grandchildren, said the neighbors aren’t the only ones who use the pool. He gets in, too, after everyone has gone home.
