With Toys”R”Us Out of the Picture, Could Popular 80s Store KB Toys Come Back?

If you were a Toys“R”Us kid, then you’ve likely had a rough nostalgic trip down memory lane with the news that the toy megastore is closing for good. That sad news could spell the return of another childhood favorite, however. The history has pretty much been written for Toys “R” Us, but one question remains, will KB Toys stores come back? Representatives for KB Toys parent company Strategic Marks, LLC did not immediately return Red Tricycle’s request for comment.

KB Toys was once a competitor for Toys“R”Us, but after facing financial trouble of its own and declaring bankruptcy, the brand was actually purchased by the home of Geoffrey the Giraffe. Then a year ago the KB name, which no longer had any open stores, was acquired by Strategic Marks, LLC, a company that revives defunct brands.

In a recent phone interview with Bloomberg, Strategic Marks’ CEO Ellie Kassoff detailed his plans to open at least 1,000 pop-up shops under the KB Toys name by the next holiday shopping season later this year. “Many of you asked what our plans will be and all we can say is we spent the last six months working on a sustainable model to bring back KB Toys the right way so it can compete with not only the big box stores but on-line as well,” Kassoff shared on LinkedIn.
