Gilead is going down
The countdown is on for season five of The Handmaid’s Tale and before new episodes have even dropped, there’s exciting news. The cast of the Hulu show took to Instagram to reveal a big secret: there will be a sixth and final season for the award-winning show.
On Sept. 8, the show posted a new video that started out with Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy) saying, “Hey, Psst! Handmaid’s fans” and then it’s off to the races. Elisabeth Moss, O-T Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel, and Bradley Whitford all chime in, recapping the different themes for seasons one through five.
“In season one, we bore no more. In season two, we reclaimed our name. In season three, we set ourselves free. In season four, we preyed together. In season five, you’ll see how some sins can’t be washed away.
And as for season six…you’ll just have to wait and see.”
“It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale“, said Miller said in a statement according to Deadline. “We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.”
For uber fans of the show, the news that we’ll continue to see Gilead come apart at the seams is welcome. It’s a comfort to know that the upcoming season won’t be the last. While we’d love for the drama to go on forever, all good things must come to an end eventually.
However, Margaret Atwood’s post-war world will continue to live on. Entertainment Weekly reports that Bruce Miller, the show’s creator, has announced a sequel is in the works!
Testaments, also the name of Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is in development and will take place years after the time where June Osborne lead her revelation, will expand the world of Gilead, and will also live on Hulu. “When the follow-up series was first announced in 2019, the studio and Hulu…were in discussions with Miller about how The Testaments could become a key extension to the hit drama that put the streamer on the map for original content,” according to Hollywood Reporter.
Well, blessed be the fruit.
