Hilary Duff’s ‘Horrifying’ Flight with Her 2-Year-Old Is So Relatable

Hilary Duff is every mom just trying to get a break. The Lizzie McGuire and Younger star flew a “horrifying” 5.5 hours on a plane from Hawaii with her family. Turbulence? Not so much. Screaming 12-month-old? You bet.

Mom to son Luca Comrie, 10, daughters Banks Violet Bair, 3, and 12-month-old Mae “MaeMae” James Bair (a.k.a. The Screamer), Duff wrote on her Instagram account “It’s so loud and it goes on for so long and it’s truly wild, like a caged animal…And it happened for probably four out of the five and a half hours it takes to fly to Hawaii from L.A. It was unhinged. We were freaking out. There was nothing we could do. Everyone hated us for sure.”

“MaeMae” wasn’t all howls. She did give her mom a 20 minute reprieve as she napped, but said Duff “She’s also super attached to me right now, so the first flight, I held her the entire time, and she wasn’t unhappy, she was just loud. Loud loud loud. She was so loud, the man sitting across the aisle from me, I was like, ‘I’m so sorry. I feel awful. There’s nothing we can do. I feel so bad. I’m so sorry.”

And guess what? “He wouldn’t even look at me, you guys, he just went like this [simulates a loud sigh]. God, I’m never going to unsee it. It was horrifying.” At that point, we might have been happy to let “MaeMae” carry on with her crooning, just to spite him, but Duff continued to try and manage the situation—to no avail.

“Guys, I’ve never been more embarrassed in my entire life than being on a plane with MaeMae,” Duff said. “She was the naughtiest baby—and before I hear all the comments, about like, ‘Oh, it’s her ears or her teeth.’ No. Nope. She was perfectly fine. But she has found this new level of volume when she screams.”

But let’s be honest. “MaeMae” is pretty darn cute. It would be hard to hold a grudge against her, even if you did find yourself on the plane with no sleeping or anxiety aids, or even ear plugs. Her mom feels the same way, writing “I will only forgive her because of these cute little gap teef.”

The star, who is currently involved in the new How I Met Your Mother spinoff, How I Met Your Father, later posted a video of a much happier “MaeMae” captioned “Friends again after the plane…”
