Perhaps one of the most iconic visuals in all of LA is the giant donut you see (Randy’s) on the way to or from the airport. This 1953 landmark was designed by Henry J. Goodwin and since the shop has very inexpensive donuts (that are actually pretty darn tasty) and is open 24 hours a day, it’s well worth a special trip with the kids. But did you know that donut shops in the 1950s in Southern California often had giant donuts on top? Another still exists, in the form of The Donut Hole in La Puente, and this one has an even bigger donut (26 ft., compared to Randy’s 23 ft.) that you can drive through. It also sells giant donuts, maple bacon donuts and more. Take your kids to both (you’re teaching them about the iconic “programmatic architecture of SoCal of the early 20th Century!) to contrast and compare.
