8 Awesome Outdoor Artworks to See On the High Line

Since having kids, your days of strolling through Chelsea art galleries may be temporarily on hold. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still experience cutting-edge and contemporary art with your kids. Dotted along the High Line, right above all those art galleries, you’ll find a ton of public outdoor art that’s fun, free and forward-looking like the clever Sheep Station, a gas station turned faux sheep grazing pasture. And because this outdoor kid-friendly Chelsea art tour is like an open-air gallery, you and the kids will be outside and you won’t have to shush them once.

Busted

The Art: Busted is series of sculptures scattered along the High Line. Featuring works by nine international artists, Busted turns the art form of a “bust” on its head. Sometimes serious and sometimes mischievous, the sculptures range from an Alice in Wonderland figure looking through a frame (Before a Framework by Ruby Neri) to a goofy, eight-eyed monster (Liquor Store Attendant by George Condo, above).

Fun for Kids: Some of the artwork is hidden within the High Line’s long grasses, while others are boldly placed on the boardwalk. A fun way to discover the sculpture is to play “I Spy” with your kids as you stroll along the High Line.

See It: Various spots along the High Line, starting from Gansevoort Street to West 28th Street. Now through April 2014.
