Handmade Holiday: 6 Kid-Friendly Spots for DIY Gifts

Here’s a holiday PSA from us here at Red Tricycle NY:  Your mother-in-law does not need another serving platter that you picked up in a panic at Macy’s. However, she’ll love one personally hand-painted by her grandchild! Make holiday dreams come true — and keep your little one engaged on a cold or rainy day — at one of these drop-in spots where kids can unleash their creativity and help you cross a few folks off your gift list!

For Nature Lovers: Wave Hill in the Bronx

Maybe your kid’s a nature lover… or maybe you’d just like them to be. Luckily they can make nature-inspired creations at Wave Hill, a 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx. Come Saturday or Sunday mornings for one of its Family Art Projects where kids will work with a naturalist-artist to blend nature and art into everything from berry-studded candles to festive wall hangings (free with admission to the garden).Want to take it up a notch?  Check out linocut card printing, wreath making or foliage arranging, which will be offered for an additional fee on Holiday Workshop Weekend.

Good to know: Admission to Wave Hill is free Tues. & Sat., 9a.m.-noon.

Hours: Sat.&Sun. in the  Sally & Gilbert Kerlin Learning Center, 10a.m.-1p.m.; grounds open in the winter until 4:30p.m.; free with admission.
