Reese Witherspoon is reprising one of her most beloved roles in Tracy Flick Can’t Win, a long-awaited sequel to Election
While we love just about everything about Reese Witherspoon, her willingness to revisit her classic, beloved roles is definitely high on the list. And now she’s doing it again: The Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama star will return as Tracy Flick in Tracy Flick Can’t Win, a long-awaited sequel to her 1999 dark comedy, Election.
Deadline first reported the news this week, but very little is known so far about the film. Witherspoon is producing it for her media company, Hello Sunshine, and it will be made for Paramount+. But as for details about other stars reprising their roles (like Matthew Broderick or Chris Klein), or when we can expect the follow-up film to be released? We still don’t know any of that.
Director Alexander Payne, who cowrote and directed Election, will also direct the sequel. And we know that Tracy Flick Can’t Win is based on the novel of the same name, which is a sequel to the novel that Election was based on. While no plot details have been confirmed, the book may offer some hints—it follows Tracy Flick in her 40s, now working at a public high school in New Jersey and gunning for a job as principal. She also now has a 10-year-old daughter and a doctor boyfriend, and in the more modern setting (and as the #MeToo movement is taking place), she’s grappling with her past relationship with her former high school teacher, back when she was a student politician.
When it was released in 1999, Election was nominated for the Oscar for best adapted screenplay, and Witherspoon racked up best actress nominations at the Golden Globes and the Spirit Awards. Fans have been clamoring for this sequel for decades, and while it seems like their hopes are coming true, that’s all we know for now.
