Young Rugby Player Gives a Pep Talk That’s Worthy of a Sports Movie

rugby kid pep talk, two rugby players huggung

Teaching our kids to be resilient is incredibly important, but sometimes it’s their peers who can give the best lessons. The Sedbergh School, a boarding school in North West England, captured just such a teachable moment on film when a young rugby player gave his teammate the ultimate pep talk. (To be honest, now we’re even feeling better about ourselves!)

Filmed over Easter weekend, the video starts with a young student in tears, saying, “Everyone’s older than me; everyone’s bigger than me.” While his coach tells him, “You don’t have to tackle,” another student in a bright jacket approaches and dishes out some words of wisdom.

He immediately puts his hands on the boy’s shoulders and says, “Look at me bud. I’m the shortest kid here. It does not matter who you are. It does not matter if you are short or young. It doesn’t matter if you are taller. It does not matter if you are fat. It does not matter at all. Bud, you are a brilliant rugby player. You understand that? You are insane. You are actually insane for your age. Come here, give me a hug.”

The coach said summed it up perfectly: “Best teammate ever.” After posting just five days ago, the video already has more than 120k views, more than 500 comments and 11K likes.

Even the official rugby community is chiming in, with the famed New Zealand national rugby team, the All Blacks, commenting, “Love to see it! That’s the spirit of rugby 🖤🖤.”

It looks like mum and dad are also joining the conversation and giving kudos to their son, whose name is Jack. Mum (@meljmarriott) commented, “My beautiful boy so proud of you Jack ❤️.” Meanwhile, dad, (@pmmarriott) shares, “Super proud ❤️ of you son. Just shows what team and rugby is all about, growing with courage and character beats physical height and shape any day. Thank you 🙏 Higgy and all the coaching team for everything you do. 🙏🙏🙏”
