Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Son Freaking Out Over Her 1st Emmy Nom Is the Best

Abbott Elementary has been bringing fans joy since it debuted back in December 2021, and it kept the good vibes going when the show scored seven well-deserved Emmy nominations this week. In a feel-good moment that wouldn’t have been out of place on the hit show, the son of actress Sheryl Lee Ralph gifted fans with an absolutely heartwarming video of the moment she found out she was among the nominees.

Sheryl Lee Ralph plays Barbara Howard on the show—a no-nonsense kindergarten teacher who’s a role model and leader at the inner-city Philadelphia elementary school. The role earned her a Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series nod, and perhaps more importantly, earned her adoration and joy from her son.

The actress is in utter disbelief as she hears the news, and her son completely loses it when she confirms she got the nomination.

“You got nominated? You’re nominated? MOMMY! YES!” Etennie Maurice exclaims. “MOMMY! YES!” He cheers her over and over again, and how good must it have felt for Ralph to hear the excitement and pride in her son’s voice? It’s an amazing, ecstatic moment, one that was a long time coming for the actress.

“With over 50 years of being in this thing we call showbusiness, today my mother became an Emmy nominated actress,” Maurice tweeted. “I’m so glad I could be here in Jamaica with you for this moment.”

In a follow-up Tweet, Maurice said his sister shares the same pride in their famous mama. “Man I’m so excited for my ‘mommy’ man. Ever since I was born I always envisioned her being nominated for an Emmy. My sister @Coco_Maurice and I are our mother’s biggest cheerleaders.”

We can only imagine how Maurice and Coco would react if their mom wins the Emmy. There’s some stiff competition in the category, including from one of Ralph’s Abbott castmates. Actress Janelle James also got a nomination for her role as the school’s always hilarious, always inappropriate principal Ava Coleman, so fans might have a little trouble deciding who to root for. The show is also up for Outstanding Comedy Series.

We’ll find out on September 19 how many Emmys Abbott Elementary walks away with, and thankfully, we won’t have to wait too much longer after that for what fans really want. The show’s second season debuts just a couple of days later on September 21.
