The holiday season often means packing up the kids and hopping on the interstate for a family road trip. While they say the journey is more important than the destination, ask any parent who has spent a few hours cooped up in a car with an antsy toddler and they’ll tell you that keeping kids entertained is more than half the battle. Flip through our album to discover some engrossing apps that’ll divert even the most impatient junior road warrior and help delay the inevitable question, “Are we there yet?”
Minecraft Pocket Edition
Serious Minecrafters may poo-poo the Pocket Edition of this addictive and wildly popular creative building game, but casual and younger ’crafters will enjoy hours of gameplay on their mobile devices with this well-made app. Like the desktop and console versions of Minecraft, PE lets Minecrafters of all skill levels play in creative mode with unlimited resources or in survival mode, where they can craft weapons and armor to battle dangerous mobs. The latest app update includes the second Biome Settlers Skin Pack, which features 24 settlers from the Nether and Mooshroom biomes. (Non-Minecrafter translation: there’s plenty of new stuff on the current Pocket Edition, which means more activities to occupy little roadtrippers.)
Good for ages 5 & up.
Available on Google Play and Windows, $6.99, and iTunes, $9.99.
