Mayah Zamora, the last injured Uvalde survivor, is now home

For the last two months, University Health in San Antonio, Texas has been home to Mayah Zamora. The 10-year-old was admitted on May 24 as a survivor of the Uvalde school shooting, but after 66 days spent recovering, Mayah has left the building!

In a tweet from the hospital on July 29, it was announced that the last patient from the shooting was discharged, leaving to cheers and applause. “She passed out roses and left in style thanks to @HEB. She is our hero and we can’t wait to see all she accomplished in the future!” read the tweet.

According to the family’s Go Fund Me page, Mayah was admitted on May 24 in critical condition. At the time, her brother Ruben shared that she had injuries to three of her limbs that required casts and splints. “For anyone who needs hope… for anyone who needs a miracle… here she is right in front of you,” he said.

Since San Antonio is an hour and a half away from Uvalde, the family left their home to be by her side on her road to recovery. “This long road includes numerous surgeries Mayah had undergone, future surgeries she may require, future hospital and doctor’s visits, mental health/trauma treatment, amongst many other things,” says the fundraising page.

It was just a few weeks ago that Mayah’s brother shared her progress on Facebook. “I’ll tell you what she is strong, she is determined, she is stubborn, she is hard headed- and on top of all that.. she wants to get out of that hospital. She has surprised the doctors so much,” reads his update.

The announcement from University Health comes as welcome news as the hospital has reported daily on the fact that it has one patient from Uvalde in good condition. Now, they have one less resident.
