The Plainfield, Illinois house has been given the green light to re-open this weekend
Dave Appel and his family love spooky things, especially Stranger Things. The creator behind Instagram account @horrorpropsdave took that love of all things scary and transformed his home into the ultimate Halloween display this year––but not everyone was a fan.
The Appels decided to recreate a scene from Stranger Things’ newest season, in which Max Mayfield rises into the air (of course while listening to Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill). The display is mind-bending and has us scratching our heads wondering how they do it––along with tons of others who’ve seen it on TikTok.
The family lives on Whispering Oaks Court and is now undoubtedly getting way more traffic thanks to the display. Despite getting prior approval from their neighbors, they still received a complaint when a gawker pulled into someones driveway and walked on their lawn to get a peep at the setup, according to TMZ.

Out of respect for his neighbors, Dave decided to take the display down. But with fans clamoring for the family to keep it up, they decided to meet with City Manager James Capparelli who confirmed the haunt was a-ok and on private property.
“I would encourage the public to, if they do travel there, to be mindful where they park,” Sgt. Dwayne English of the Joliet Police Dept. tells ABC 7. “Also be respectful of the property of others.”

“We hope the neighbors are happy and we don’t want to burn any bridges with them,” Appel tells ABC 7. “We just want them to be able to enjoy it with us.”
If you’re in the Plainfield area, you can catch the full display on Fridays and Saturdays from 5-10 p.m. and Sundays from 4-9 p.m. During the week, the display will be up for visitors, without lights and sound.
