All of the headlines from the first edition were taken from actual magazines
Comic artist and mom Mary Catherine Starr continues to nail it when it comes to pointing out the double standards of parenting. In her most recent creation, the genius behind @momlife_comics has whipped up a special magazine, just for Dad!
Starr shared the first issue back in May, which addressed managing clutter, how to stay toned and trim, self-care hacks, kid-friendly meals, how to get help around the house and dealing with dad guilt. While the cartoonish cover gives it a funny feel, each one of the titles were taken from actual magazines geared towards women.
“What if dads received this kind of societal messaging instead of moms? What if all marketing and advertising was geared towards helping men ‘do it all’ while still looking ‘young + hot’ instead of women?” Starr captioned the post. What if indeed.
The post resonated with Starr’s 235k followers, who she let inspire her for the fall issue of the “magazine.” The comic encouraged them to weigh in with their own topics, which she turned into the newest post.
Her new subject lines include working dad guilt, father-in-law drama, how to look younger without Botox, date night outfit ideas and even a special back-to-school bonus that helps you pack better lunches!
If the magazines and their topics make you laugh, you’re not alone. Can you imagine standing in line at the grocery store and seeing a headline about how to manage working dad guilt?
The funny thing is, we wager that most dads would love support dealing with many of the topics Starr parodies. Instagram user @nicksimard shared that he would definitely read a magazine like Starr’s, given the lacks of resources currently available. “Even books and websites that try to be better end up being about stereotypes, like how clueless dads are, or nothing is ever serious,” he says.
While our parenting society has come a long way, we still have further to go when it comes to not placing the “do it all” expectation on mothers and treating fathers as more than just babysitters.
Back in May, Starr showed the first issue to her husband and he approved. “That sounds like a good magazine! I want to read it!”
