A ‘Freaky Friday’ Sequel Is Officially in the Works

Lindsay Lohan and Jaime Lee Curtis have confirmed a Freaky Friday sequel

It’s official: A Freaky Friday sequel is coming—multiple outlets confirmed the movie is in the works after months of rumors

It’s finally happening! 20 years after Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis paired up on screen as the body-swapping mom-and-daughter duo in Freaky Friday, the classic Disney film is getting the sequel it deserves.

The New York Times did a joint interview with the two stars, and they snuck a so-quick-you’ll-miss-it piece of info into the intro: The Freaky Friday sequel fans have been clamoring for is officially in the works at Disney. While the interview didn’t go into the details, Curtis and Lohan did touch on the film’s legacy and the fact that, even after two decades, it still means so much to so many people.

“As I went around the world with Halloween Ends, people wanted to know if there was going to be another Freaky Friday,” Curtis said. “Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.'”

This news comes after both LiLo and Curtis went public to say they were on board with doing a sequel. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon late last year, Lohan let fans know that she and Jamie Lee have been in contact about a Freaky Friday sequel and that she’s excited about the possibility.

“We did speak about it, yeah,” she said. “Let’s just take the fact that I was on set filming at the time, and Jamie Lee Curtis writes, and you just get excited and distracted immediately, so I had to bring myself down to Earth and be like, ‘I’m on set, I have to focus.’ Then she said Freaky Friday 2, and I got more excited.”

Lohan added, “We’d both be into it,” and honestly, that’s all we need to hear. Disney, what are you waiting for?!

Just a month before that, during an appearance on The View, Curtis started building hype for the idea of a Freaky Friday sequel. When co-host Sara Haines asked her if she’d be open to reprising her role and doing another body-swapping movie with Lohan, she said she’s already been in talks with Disney about it.

“I’ve already written to Disney, my friends at Disney. I’m in their new ‘Haunted Mansion’ movie,” she said. “Let me be the grandma. So then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma, who is still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon… And simply, I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I wanna be a helicopter parent in today’s world, as an old lady.”

Lohan’s new Christmas movie just premiered on Netflix, signaling the star’s official return to acting. That means the timing couldn’t be more right for Freaky Friday to make a comeback. And finally, Disney agrees.
