6 Whistle Stops for San Diego Train Enthusiasts

If names like Thomas, James and Percy are more like your kiddo’s BFFs than characters for a show, it’s time to turn off the television and check out some actual locomotives. San Diego is home to several model railroads that will leave kids entertained for hours. If your kiddo has a one-track love of trains, click through the slideshow to check out these San Diego hot spots for train enthusiasts.

Balboa Park Miniature Railroad

Located right outside the entrance of the world famous San Diego Zoo, hop on board a 3-minute ride on a model G16 (a rare antique train). It’s a half-mile mini tour of the San Diego region through four acres of Balboa Park, with signs letting you know what part of town you are traveling through (such as “East County.”) Cuddle up to over-sized, stuffed zoo animals who ride on the train and enjoy the view. Your little conductor will enjoy spotting zoo animal sculptures and going through a long tunnel before the train ride ends. No need to visit the zoo after the train ride, pony-up on the nearby historic carrousel. Cost: $3/person;  Free/1 year and under
