Got Aloha? Where to Get a Taste of Hawaii in Seattle

While Seattle has its fair share of sunshine, it also has (more than) its fair share of what seems to be endless cloudy days. When it seems like the clouds and rain won’t ever go away or when the sunshine is so bright it leaves you longing for a tropical vacation, cozy up to one (or all) of these Hawaiian restaurants and let your mind and your taste buds relax in the comforts of island-inspired cuisine.

Kauai Family Restaurant

When searching for some of the best local grindz, time and time again you will be told to seek out Kauai Family Restaurant. Located in what can best be described as a hole-in-the-wall in the Georgetown neighborhood, this family owned and operated restaurant will delight your taste buds with a tropical escape. Don’t let the exterior fool you, the inside is packed with personality and bursting with food that will leave you wondering if you had magically transported to Hawaii.

As with most Hawaiian cuisine, deciding to devour breakfast or to nosh on a lunch plate is usually the most difficult choice. At Kauai Family Grill, either way you can’t go wrong. And if all else fails, go for the breakfast and order lunch to go (no judgment). The breakfast is served all day, so have a go with the Kalua Pork with eggs and rice. If you aren’t in the mood to narrow things down, put in an order for the Blahla Special, which gives you a taste of saimin, eggs, Spam, Portuguese sausage, Vienna sausage and rice.

One of the most popular dishes served here is the Lawai Crispy Ginger Chicken. The bone-in chicken has a mouthwatering crispy outside and a tender inside that finishes nicely with a hint of ginger and sweetness. The dish comes with 6 large pieces of chicken, rice and mac salad; great for sharing or packing up for leftovers. Don’t miss the Filipino inspired Pork Adobo, marinated in a sauce created with shoyu and vinegar and tossed with adobo spices served alongside giant scoops of rice. Kauai Family Restaurant doesn’t hold back on portions and they will likely have you still eating after you have already declared to be full.

Insider Tip: One word - Malasadas. Be sure to check out this fried dough dessert that has been coated in granulated sugar. Seriously… try it! It is guaranteed to be the word hanging in conversation throughout the restaurant as everyone wants to get their hands on them. These delectable treats are only served on Saturdays, so plan accordingly.

Good to Know: Make sure to check out the hours of operation before heading out. Kauai Family Grill isn’t open on Sundays or Monday and have shortened hours during the week.
