Way back in 2008 Jenna Karvunidis threw a gender reveal party. Big deal, right? Even though just about everyone has some sort of very public gender reveal, nearly 10 years ago the trend wasn’t popular.

Karvunidis, whose 2008 blog post about the party went viral, helped to put gender reveals into the spotlight. But now the mama doesn’t exactly see things the same way she did over a decade ago.

Back in the beginning days of gender reveal parties, Karvunidis announced her new bundle of joy would be a baby girl. Fast-forward to 2019 and the mama has a new announcement—her now-10-year-old daughter Bee expresses herself in nonbinary ways and, as Karvunidis wrote on her Facebook page, “PLOT TWIST, the world’s first gender-reveal party baby is a girl who wears suits!”

The mama to three also added, “Who cares what gender the baby is?I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now––that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what’s between their legs.”
