Over 3,000 theaters will participate in the first ever National Cinema Day
If you don’t have any major Labor Day weekend plans, you may want to hit up the movie theater. That’s because National Cinema Day is Sat. Sept. 3 and you can snag a movie ticket for just $3!
Put on by the Cinema Foundation, the one-day event is being held nationwide and will include more than 30,000 screens. Each ticket will cost no more than $3 at participating theaters (that include large chains like AMC and Regal) and covers everything from matinees and evening showings to brand-new blockbuster films in every format. Yes, you can finally catch an IMAX film for less than a small fortune.
“After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” says Cinema Foundation president Jackie Brenneman. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”
Labor Day weekend is historically a slow one for the box office, so the event hopes to drive movie goers back to the plush red seats both this weekend and into the fall. Not only do viewers get to catch a new film for $3 (not including fees from third-party vendors), National Cinema Day is also showing special sneak peaks of upcoming films.
As part of the previews, you can catch new titles from A24, Amazon Studios, Disney, Focus Features, Lionsgate, Neon, Paramount, Sony Pictures Classics, Sony, United Artists Releasing, Universal, and Warner Bros.
According to NPR, National Cinema Day is being operated as a trial that could become an annual event. Here’s to hoping we can count on $3 tickets for years to come! For all the details and to find a participating theater near you, head to nationalcinemaday.org.
