Somehow it’s been 20 years since Love Actually debuted on the big screen, and the cast is celebrating with the reunion we need this holiday season
For two decades, Love Actually has been one of those enduring holiday films that’s an absolute must-watch for many people each Christmas season. This year, the iconic film is marking 20 years since it was first released in theaters, and to celebrate, the cast is having a reunion TV special that will give fans even more to celebrate.
Diane Sawyer is hosting the sit-down special, which will feature stars Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, as well as Love Actually writer and director Richard Curtis. A promotional clip shows the stars being asked to finish the sentence “Love Actually is…” to which Grant drolly replies, “Dead,” so we already know we’re in for a trip down memory lane with the Prime Minister and the rest of the cast.
Now, more than ever, we all need some love…actually.

"The Laughter & Secrets of 'Love Actually,' 20 Years Later: A @DianeSawyer Special" premieres Tuesday, Nov. 29th at 8/7c on @ABC. Stream later on @Hulu. https://t.co/ZGewRPfd2o pic.twitter.com/aDUYk4gAJR
The reunion special seems poised to answer fans’ longtime questions and give us all a heavy holiday dose of love…actually—from Thompson wondering aloud if Love Actually was “the most psychotic thing we’ve ever been in,” to all the behind-the-scenes arguments about Grant’s now-iconic dance scene (can you believe he wanted it cut from the movie?!).
“I’m out of rhythm, by the way, especially at the beginning when I wiggle my ass,” he can be seen telling Sawyer in a preview clip. “To this day, there’s many people — and I agree with them — who think it’s the most excruciating scene ever committed to celluloid. But then some people like it.”
The cast will also discuss the movie’s role in more modern times—like how the pandemic has changed our relationships and how we connect and interact. They’ll also chat with Sawyer about how love and kindness are more necessary today than ever—in both families and communities. And expect them to ultimately answer the most important question in these divisive, sometimes scary times: Is love really all around?
“The Laughter & Secrets of ‘Love Actually’: 20 Years Later – A Diane Sawyer Special” is set to air on ABC this Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. eastern time. If you miss it live, it will also be available to stream later on Hulu.
