A ‘Bridgerton’ prequel is coming to Netflix, and the full trailer provides some clues about what to expect from Charlotte’s story

Dearest readers, I hope you’re ready for a return to the world of Regency-era London. Unfortunately, we still have a ways to go before the next installment in the Bridgerton family’s story—but in the meantime, Netflix is giving us another gift altogether: a prequel series that will explore how Charlotte rose to become queen and rule over the social season.

Netflix and Shondaland have teamed up to bring us Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and there’s already a full-length trailer to enjoy.

The trailer reveals some of what we can expect: Charlotte’s marriage to King George was arranged and a bit contentious at first, but it does seem like they eventually learned to work together and navigate the hurdles of ruling an entire country together. Oh, and even though Charlotte didn’t lay eyes on the king until well into her betrothment, of course, he’s ridiculously hot. This is a Bridgerton series, after all.

And in case you’re worried this story will be too far removed from the Bridgerton drama we’ve all come to know and love, Netflix has already revealed that Charlotte’s story will be closely intertwined with many of the characters from the original series, including Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury, who both seem to serve on Charlotte’s court. While the story will be largely fictionalized, it is loosely based on the life of Queen Charlotte, who is a real character from London’s history.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” said Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s head of global TV.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story premieres on Netflix on May 4.
