If you love dark comedy, ‘Bad Sisters’ is for you

If you’re tirelessly plotting your next binge series, look no further than Bad Sisters. This ten-episode series on Apple TV+ expertly combines comedy, drama, and crime thriller, and is based on Malin-Sarah Gozin’s Belgian series, Clan.

The show, which is executive produced, created, and stars the wonderfully talented Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) follows the Garvey sisters after one of their husband’s deaths—a man they affectionately refer to as “The Prick.” It becomes clear that the sisters, Eva (Horgan), Bibi (Sarah Greene), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), and Becka (Eve Hewson), may have been involved in his demise as they tried to protect sister Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) from his vitriol.

Bad Sisters plot

Set in Ireland, the series opens at John Paul Williams (Claes Bang), otherwise known as The Prick’s, funeral. It’s clear during flashbacks, which is how half the story unfolds, that JP was not a lovable man, so there’s no real sadness to the fact that the show begins with his death. In fact, he was mean-spirited, misogynistic, and demeaning to his wife.

It quickly becomes evident the goal is to find out how it happened and who was involved, while laughing along with the sisters—bound together by their parent’s sudden deaths years prior—as they fantasize about all the ways he can (and should) go.

Bad Sisters is a murder mystery, but also a story of commitment, sisterly bonds, strong, complex female characters, and enough dark humor to hook viewers from the very beginning. Because we know JP is very much dead, the tension and action comes from following the sisters as they attempt to evade the investigation of his death by two desperate insurance agents (played by Brian Gleeson and Daryl McCormack).

With so many characters, storylines, and mayhem, you’d think certain characters would get lost, but Horgan manages to endear every single one of them to viewers from the beginning.

Bad Sisters premiere date

Bad Sisters feels like a show we’ll watch while covering our mouths, trying not to laugh at another’s demise. It’s Investigation Discovery meets A Fish Called Wanda in the best possible way, and we cannot stress enough that this show is binge-worthy.

The show premiered on August 19.
