It’s the newest doll in the Barbie’s Inspiring Women Series
Do you have an aspiring philanthropist, entrepreneur, political or social activist? Then they need the newest Barbie Inspiring Women doll, C.J. Walker.
The first documented self-made female millionaire in the country, Walker is known for crafting hair care products and cosmetics specifically for Black women. Not only was her line successful, but she paved the way for future women to break down barriers in business and entrepreneurship.
Madam C.J. Walker was born in 1867 as Sarah Breedlove on a Delta, Louisiana cotton plantation. She was the daughter of parents who were formerly enslaved and became sharecroppers, and was orphaned at the age of seven.
Through her marriage to Charles Joseph Walker, she eventually became known as C.J. Walker. Aside from being a successful business woman, Walker also raised funds to help build a YMCA branch, attended conventions and delivered lectures on political, economic, and social issues, was a member of the executive committee of the NAACP in New York, and more.
Her doll was created in collaboration with her great-great-grandaughter, A’Lelia Bundles. The Barbie is sculpted to her likeness, is wearing a full-length skirt and a blouse with floral print and ruffled details and comes with a “Madam C.J. Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower” accessory.
The Barbie Inspiring Women Series “pays tribute to incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before,” says Mattel. The line has already recognized like Eleanor Roosevelt, Dr. Maya Angelou, Sally Ride, and more.
The collection serves not only as recognition for the hard work that paved the way for this generation, but also as a means for children to see themselves reflected in the toys and content around them. The new Madam C.J. Walker Barbie is available now at Barbie.com for $35, and other retailers nationwide.
