Even if your little sprouts seem to set up a grudge match over just about everything: choosing the Friday night movie, toppled LEGO towers, and endless hours of she-touched-me-again, in the end, a brother or sister is a built-in best friend. The Magic Treehouse Series

Age: 5-8

Sure, you can’t toss a lunch box without hitting one of these super popular, early chapter book series about two siblings who time-and-place travel via a tree house. But super-popular does not necessarily mean bad, and these have a lot to offer. The writing is gentle (even lyrical at times), the plot lines provide loads of action, and the caring yet believable relationship between Jack and Annie is one we’d dream for our kids to emulate.

Available at penguinrandomhouse.com, $4.99.
