Donut Diaries: The 6 Best DC Donut Shops

Read next

Editor’s note: We’re making every effort to provide you with up-to-date information regarding re-openings in the DMV. Please call MD & VA restaurants to confirm hours and seating options before heading out with the kids. DC restaurants are currently closed for indoor dining through 1/22, but may be open for carry out & delivery (see below).

There are lots of ways to curb a sugar craving, but donuts might be the best of all sugary worlds. Soft, chewy, rich, and decadent with dozens of varieties, you and your kids can all feel sweetly satisfied with donuts for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or your after-dinner dessert. Whether you want a chocolate glazed, jelly-filled, or one of the other 20 (at least!) varieties of donuts, these six shops can fill any tummy perfectly.

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken

Kids craving donuts but it’s too close to dinner (or lunch)? Compromise and make a meal of their craving by heading to Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken, where you can literally get dinner and dessert on the same plate – in the form of a chicken sandwich with a donut bun! Don’t want a donut bun? That’s cool! You can get a more traditional chicken meal and order your donuts for dessert when you’re done. Try the S’mores donut for a campfire treat anytime!

Safety regulations: Astro Doughnuts is open for to-go and delivery.

Duck Donuts

It’s a little bit of a drive to get Duck Donuts, but these custom made-to-order donuts are more than worth it! Order a dozen of their limited time seasonal donuts, their most popular assortments, or a dozen of your very own selections. You can also get a half-dozen, but who wants to limit themselves like that? They also offer a list of their “Fan Favorites,” offering some delicious donuts customers love, some of which are deliciously interesting.

B Doughnuts

B Doughnut has a bit of a cult-like following and it’s really no wonder: their Hawaiian-style Portuguese doughnuts are out of this world delicious!  Their donuts are more savory, such as the Ube-filled (purple yam) or the everything bagel doughnut, making this the perfect shop for those who like their sweet treats a little less sweet. In fact, they even state right on their website that they are “doughnuts for those who don’t really like doughnuts” and say that they may not taste or feel like most donuts. But they still have plenty of the sweet flavors too, with a whole collection of more traditionally glazed donuts. Check out their Cinnamon Toast Crunch Specialty Flavor, too! If you’re not usually a doughnut-lover or you're looking to lower your family sugar intake, give them a try!

District Doughnut and Coffee

If you’ve lived in DC more than a hot minute, you’re probably already familiar with District Doughnut and Coffee. But they’re still worth a mention for rotating their flavors seasonally. Check out the winter menu featuring such tasty treats as Gingerbread Cookie and Hot Cocoa doughnuts. And if you, or one of your littles, often feel like you’re missing out on the doughnut deliciousness because you can’t have gluten, they even have Gluten-free Fridays where they offer a different flavor donut in its gluten-free form!

King Street Oyster Bar

Doughnut shops aren't the only place to nab a sweet treat. You'll find a number of DC restaurants that list fried dough on their menu, and King Street Oyster is one of our favorites. They serve a dessert platter of fresh donut holes that you can dunk in chocolate or raspberry dipping sauces. It's a fun after-dinner treat for the whole family.

Safety regulations: DC dining is currently suspended in the District until 1/22. King Street Oyster Bar is open for pick-up & delivery.
