Say Bye to the Disney Vault because Disney+ Will Have the Entire Disney Library

With Disney+, Disney’s streaming service set to launch later this year, the House of Mouse is gearing up its library of movies that will be available to subscribers—which also means that the Disney Vault is permanently opening, if you’re a subscriber.

If you have a collection of Disney DVDs and BluRay discs at home, then you are likely familiar with the Disney Vault, which like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, opened its doors to invite fans into the magical realm of Disney movies for a limited time only. The company would often re-release classic titles, like Bambi and Snow White, for a short period and then send the title back into the Vault—and off store shelves.

Now the Vault is opening its doors permanently as those elusive titles that haven’t been available to purchase for a while will be now be accessible on Disney+ all the time. In a recent shareholder meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger reportedly explained that the full Disney library would be available on the new platform.

“The service, which I mentioned earlier is going to launch later in the year, is going to combine what we call library product, movies, and television, with a lot of original product as well, movies and television. And at some point fairly soon after launch it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a vault and brought out basically every few years will be on the service,” said Iger. “And then, of course, we’re producing a number of original movies and original television shows as well that will be Disney-branded.”

Iger also gave more details on future Disney titles, explaining that original Disney movies would hit the platform within one year of theatrical release. He also confirmed that current films, like the new Captain Marvel would be available on Disney+ as well. Still no word on the official launch date of Disney’s highly-anticipated streaming service, but it will be sometime later this year.
