By now, chances are you’ve seen, heard and read all about the new fave character from Disney+’s The Mandalorian. The Child, a.k.a. baby Yoda, is popping up just about everywhere—including Pittsburgh’s UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital!
The hospital recently celebrated the holiday in a very Star Wars way. UPMC Magee nurse Caitlin Pechin crocheted adorable Santa hats, complete with out of this world Yoda-like green ears.

According to Pechin, it took about an hour-and-a-half to crochet each teeny tiny hat. This isn’t the first time the nurse has created completely cute outfits for the newborns she cares for. Along with the Santa-Yoda hats, Pechin has also made pickle swaddles, Mr. Rogers sweaters, hockey skates and red, white and blue hats for the Olympics.
So how did this sweet Star Wars holiday event come to be? According to Patty Genday, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services, this isn’t the first time hospital staff has celebrated the newborns and the holidays.
Genday said in a press interview, “This holiday tradition probably began decades ago when we dressed our babies in stockings. We have such a wonderful, creative staff here that it has just transitioned to many different celebrations.” She continued, “I think our Magee babies, with what you’ll see this year, are really the force of our future.”
