Family-Friendly Farm Stays in Southern California

Lucerne Valley, CA: Flip Flop Ranch

Located about two hours from DTLA, this 40-acre ranch proudly invites urbanites to lose the bustle of the modern day and slow down to the pace of country life. "There is a pace to life on the farm that starts with the early morning wake-up call by the rooster and the sound of the farm equipment," says the farm's web page, "and that ends with quiet and the total darkness at night, except for a fantastic view of the stars." You'll stay in a 5-bedroom upscale-rural farmhouse with a fully-stocked kitchen and noise machines in every room to block out the sounds of morning roosters (unless you want to wake up the farm's way).

Family Farm Perks: Mingle with the farm's sheep and lambs, pigs and piglets, cows, chickens, cats, geese, ducks, turkeys, peacocks, goats, and horses—including a variety of endangered livestock breeds you won't find in most American farms (the farm devotes itself to preserving these endangered breeds). In addition to exploring the farm, guests can learn how to make cheese, milk a goat (which may not be available in colder months), cuddle the farm's baby animals, and get a taste of country life.

Sleeps: 15 guests (5 bedrooms)
Cost: $310 per night
