NBC Washington’s Doug Kammerer is many things, but he’s a dad first. In a recent broadcast for Storm Team4, the Chief Meteorologist was tracking a local tornado warning when he realized something important: the storm was about to pass over his very own house.

Without breaking stride, Kammerer picked up his phone and called his kids in the middle of the segment. “Kenton, you there buddy? Hey man, I want you to get down to the basement. We got a tornado warning. I want to make sure you and Cally get down as soon as you can.” After ending the call, the dad to two looked visibly relieved at having gotten his kids to safety while he was at work.

Kammerer is basically all of us parents putting our kids first––just doing it on live television.

Also like many of us, he reveals that he had to call them “because I know what my kids are doing right now, they’re probably online gaming. And they’re not seeing this.”

TODAY shares “This was a scary moment for me. As I am zooming in on the radar, I noticed my house is right in the path of the tornado. My kids were home alone and I knew they would not be paying attention to the warning. As I was live on air, I was debating in my head if I should call them while I was on TV and I soon realized I had to make that call. I had to protect my kids.”

Luckily, no one was injured as a result of the tornado and Kammerer’s kids remained safe. The broadcaster is joining the ranks of other television professionals who have been sharing the realities of parenting and work.

This year, Meteorologist Rebecca Schuld made headlines when she brought her infant daughter on a segment for the weather, much to viewers delight. And former TV reporter Kayla Sullivan continue to entertain her TikTok audience as she “reports” on the status of her toddler’s tantrums.

One thing’s for certain: we never get tired of seeing these real life parenting moments.
