One mom’s hilarious video highlights all the ways vacations change when you get older—showing a typical trip in her 20s vs in her 40s
Just like vacations change once you have kids, they also change as you get older. When you’re in your 40s, your idea of a relaxing trip away is vastly different from what it was in your 20s—and one mom’s hilarious YouTube video highlights all the differences.
Kim Holderness, of the YouTube channel Holderness Family Laughs, stars in the video as both her 20-something and 40-something self, comparing vacations at both ages by alternating between them as she shows scenes of packing, booking a place to stay, planning an itinerary, eating, drinking, and more.
The video opens with Kim’s 20-something persona, telling a friend on the phone, “I’ve accrued 3.4 vacation days after working at my job for an entire year. If we stay up the entire time, that’s like a 10-day vacation!”
She then flips to her 40-something, present-day self, explaining, “So we have the whole week off, but really, it’s two-and-a-half days, who are we kidding? It takes me a couple days to unwind, and I like to come back by Friday so I can go grocery shopping, get the laundry done. I mean, I’m not going to just jump back into my workweek. After being around all you people, I’m going to need a day alone on my phone. In the dark.”
Next up is packing. 20-something Kim checks her tote bag as she exits the house, noting that she has “3 bikinis, a cover-up, and some heels—all packed!”
Meanwhile, 40-something Kim takes inventory of the different bags she’s packed: one for her “good hats,” one for supplements, one for everything the kids will forget to pack, one for snacks, and one for shampoo. Oh, and all four of her pillows.
The video goes on to show 20-something Kim splitting a tiny hotel room with 12 friends, getting a sunburn to form her “base tan,” drinking a case of beer in two hours, and nibbling on a shared box of Triscuits to avoid spending money on food. 40-something Kim, on the other hand, is living her best vacation life with a pricey vacation rental that gives every family member their own bathroom (very necessary), SPF-100, mocktails on mocktails, and a sea bass dinner.
The video is a hilarious—yet perfect— reminder that sure, things change as we get older. But does that mean they get worse? Absolutely not. And we’ll die on that hill while we lock ourselves in our private vacation bathroom for some peace and quiet, the one thing every mom deserves on vacation.
