You know those days when your kids are climbing the walls? Maybe even literally, climbing the sofas, the beds, and anything else they can scale in your apartment? Head out to one of these NYC playgrounds where you’ll find nets, pyramids, walls and more to climb that’ll put traditional jungle gyms to shame.

Teardrop Park

Made completely from natural elements (think rocks and sand with a few plants), Teardrop Park in Battery Park City was created in collaboration with play experts from the Natural Learning Initiative to encourage children to interact with nature. It may not be the largest public park in Manhattan, nor the playground with the most stuff, but it’s most likely the coolest. Designed by innovative landscape architect Michael Van Valkenberg, the part features artwork by Ann Hamilton and Michael Mercil and lovely naturalistic plantings, making it a respite for frazzled parents. Kids love the children’s slide, sand boxes, water stations, a reading area with rock seats, plus fantastic places to climb and “rock hop.” Its small size makes it ideal for those times when you just need to sit for a bit without worrying about chasing after multiple kids. Bring a cup of coffee and something to read. You’re going to be here awhile.

Location: Between Warren and Murray St., east of River Terrace, Battery Park

Transport: A, C train to Broadway/Nassau St. or Chambers St.; E train to World Trade Center; 4, 5 to Fulton St.
