Since having kids, your days of strolling through Chelsea art galleries may be temporarily on hold. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still experience cutting-edge and contemporary art with your kids. Dotted along the High Line, right above all those art galleries, you’ll find a ton of public outdoor art that’s fun, free and forward-looking like the clever Sheep Station, a gas station turned faux sheep grazing pasture. And because this outdoor kid-friendly Chelsea art tour is like an open-air gallery, you and the kids will be outside and you won’t have to shush them once.

Urban Rattle

The Art: Just the title of this outdoor sculpture will make any mommy or daddy sit up and take notice. American artist Charlie Hewitt’s Urban Rattle looks just like it sounds: a super-sized baby rattle made with industrial-strength materials. The sculpture consists of seven 20-foot-tall poles topped with whimsical designs. Located on the patio of luxury rental complex Ten23, Urban Rattle is a permanent artwork – or until the residents can’t tolerate all the people taking photos of this playful sculpture.

Fun for Kids: Kids will dig the fact that they can relate to the sculpture and that parts of it look like a Pac Man icon and a pacifier.

See It: High Line: eastern side between West 22nd and West 23rd Streets. On permanent view.
