While we’ve certainly experienced some steamy days this fall, it is October, which means the leaves on area trees will soon start to turn. (The Old Farmer’s Almanac, predicts an especially vivid show this year, with NYC enjoying peak colors through the end of October. For up-to-date status of things, check out New York State’s fall foliage report.) A trip out of town is nice, but you don’t have to leave the city to see incredible color. Click through to find spots for gorgeous vistas, unique vantage points and full-on autumn splendor.

Fort Greene Park

Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park features a gentle elevation to its centerpiece Prison Ship Martyrs monument. The colorful view features more than 50 different types of trees, many of which were planted in the 1860s by luminary landscape architects Olmsted and Vaux. Follow the Tree Trail they mapped out for you and see how many you can find (they have identifying markers.) The park is also loaded with Revolutionary War history—enough so that it drew the attention and advocacy of a young Walt Whitman—and has a Visitor’s Center where you can learn more.

Logistics: Seems most trains lead to Fort Greene. Take the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, or R to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center; the C to Lafayette; or the G to Fulton Street.
