Chin stumbled during her broadcast and her co-workers knew something was wrong

An Oklahoma news anchor was delivering her morning newscast and quickly realized something was wrong. It turns out she was having a stroke live on air.

Julie Chin of Tulsa’s KJRH began stumbling over her words during the morning broadcast, so she stopped and said, “I’m sorry, something is going on with me this morning, and I apologize to everybody,”  then turned it over to the meteorologist for her report. “The episode seemed to have come out of nowhere,” Chin explained later in a Facebook post. “I felt great before our show. However, over the course of several minutes during our newscast, things started to happen. First, I lost partial vision in one eye. A little bit later my hand and arm went numb. Then, I knew I was in big trouble when my mouth would not speak the words that were right in front of me on the teleprompter.”

Her colleagues jumped in, realizing something was really wrong, and called 911. “I’m so grateful for your quick action,” Chin told them. “I’ve always said I work on the best team, and this is one more reason why.”

Chin went onto explain that she’s had a series of tests done since the event and, so far, they are looking good. “At this point, Doctors think I had the beginnings of a stroke, but not a full stroke,” she continued. “There are still lots of questions, and lots to follow up on, but the bottom line is I should be just fine.”

She also offered some sound advice for those who may believe they are experiencing the beginning stages of a stroke, using the acronym: BE FAST.

  • B.alance (Sudden loss of balance)
  • E.yes (Sudden vision changes)
  • F.ace (Facial droop)
  • A.rms (One arm drifts downward)
  • S.peech (Slurred/confused speech)
  • T.ime & Terrible headache

Chin was lucky to be surrounded by quick-thinking people who could immediately step in and help. “I’m thankful for the emergency responders and medical professionals who have shared their expertise, hearts, and smiles with me,” she said in her post. “My family, friends, and KJRH family have also covered me in love and covered my shifts.”
