There’s no shortage of heartbreaking news continuing to come out of Ukraine, including the fact that thousands of pets have now been left behind. But amid the sadness, there are rays of hope, such as Polish mothers leaving behind strollers for Ukrainian refugees and organizations delivering food to abandoned pets.

Paws of War, a New York-based charity, is putting boots on the ground and installing feeders for hungry and abandoned pets in Ukraine, in addition to delivering food and water. To date, they have already delivered more than seven tons of food and supplies, but they still need help.

“The demand is overwhelming and heartbreaking. With your support we can get more people and supplies to the hardest hit areas where they are needed the most,” according to a statement on the nonprofits’ site.

In addition to providing food and water, the organization is also setting up temporary safe areas so cats, dogs and other animals can find shelter as they work to find a permanent solution.

In a Facebook post, the charity shares, “We are working around the clock to rescue animals and get them out of Ukraine to emergency shelter at the border and foster placements. They will be found loving homes in neighboring countries, and some will be coming to safety in America to find forever homes through our network of placement partners.” In the meantime, the teams are helping to provide for scared and lost animals who are battling the freezing temperatures and lack of food and water.
