If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of This Is Us, spoilers ahead! The Pearson clan just welcomed another powerhouse mom into the fold with Phylicia Rashad’s cameo on This Is Us.
Already a famous TV mom for her iconic role as Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show, Rashad was the perfect fit to fill the role of Beth’s mysterious mom. Although she was only alluded to briefly prior to her appearance, it’s been clear since the start of this season that she is set to play a pivotal role in Beth’s past and future.
The full plot has yet to unfold after this week’s premiere appearance by the actress on the show, but like everything else on This Is Us, it’s clear that the part was destined for her. As the Los Angeles Times reported, Rashad once taught Watson during her tenure at Howard University. “She was so young and so delicate and yet so strong in a very, very quiet way,” Rashad told the Times.
Exploring the complex mother and daughter dynamic is a major part of the series and this duo definitely hit it out of the park. With the way this show plays with time, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see Rashad make a repeat appearance.
