The Japanese kaiten sushi bar concept, where the sushi is placed on a rotating conveyor belt that travels through the restaurant, is guaranteed to be a huge hit with kids. While at some restaurants the conveyor belt concept can mean that the sushi isn’t as fresh as it ought to be, this isn’t the case at Isobune. This is a great way to introduce little ones to sushi and Japanese food, as they’re sure to be transfixed by the novelty of plates magically traveling around the room. The revolutionary concept can prove so engrossing for little ones that it can make for unusually peaceful dining experience. Just make sure to clarify that the little sushi “boats” for looking, and not touching! The kaiten experience means that the prices aren’t as steep as they are at many Bay Area sushi restaurants either, which is a welcome change. Isobune offers the option of ordering cooked dishes and specialty items from their sushi chefs as well as off the boats on the conveyor, if you’re craving an old standby like tempura or teriyaki. Some customers have been known to seek out Isobune for the rare black tobiko sushi with quails’ eggs on top, but for the less adventurous the restaurant offers many of the usual sushi rolls as well, like California or Tuna rolls. Personally we like the Unagi (barbecued eel!) The Burlingame outpost is an offshoot of the original Japantown location.
