Domhnall Gleeson is the ultimate villain in FX’s new show

Summer is over, the kids are back in school and that means one thing: parents can finally get back to watching our own TV shows! And what better way to kick off the fall season than with a creepy and thrilling serial killer show?

Enter Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson in FX’s newest series, The Patient. The two play Alan Strauss, a therapist and Sam Fortner, a patient who admit he’s a serial killer. What could go wrong?

Apparently, a lot as seen in the first full length trailer. The psychological thriller comes to FX courtesy of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg who headed up The Americans, and serve as co-creators, executive producers and writers. Steve Carell is also earning his paycheck on the project, leading the cast and serving as an executive producer too.

According to the synopsis from FX, Sam comes to Alan to ask for help because he has “a compulsion to kill people.” While the first session most definitely takes place in Alan’s office, somewhere along the way thing take a nasty turn and we soon see Alan as Sam’s prisoner, ankle shackle and all.

Alan gives Sam his best shot at uncovering the root of his compulsion, but he refuses to discuss his mother which keeps his therapy in limbo. Meanwhile, with nothing else to do but think, Alan must work through his own trauma, including the loss of his wife and estrangement from his son.

Other cast joining the project include Linda Emond as Candace Fortner, Laura Niemi as Beth Strauss, Andrew Leeds as Ezra Strauss, and David Alan Grier as Charlie Addison, Alan’s mentor.

The 10-episode limited series is produced by FX Productions and debuted only on Hulu on Aug. 30.
