Zac Efron doesn’t have to do much to get us excited but a recent interview with E! News is sending us into an absolute tizzy. The star of the new Firestarter film has officially revealed he would be more than happy to reprise his role as Troy Bolton in another High School Musical.
“I mean, to have an opportunity in any form to go back and work with that team would be so amazing. My heart is still there. That would be incredible. I hope it happens,” he shares on a recent press junket interview.
There’s been no official word on whether there will ever be a High School Musical 4, but fans of the OG film from 2006 can dream. The Disney Original film was basically the launch pad for Efron’s career, followed by 2007 and 2008 follow-up films that just made us love him all the more.
He goes on to say “And I think everybody would love to get involved. I’ll try to keep them moving in the right direction” in the E! News interview. Please do, Zac!
If a HSM4 ever happens, it will truly be a miracle. Back in 2021, director Kenny Ortega told Variety that “making another movie set at East High ‘isn’t in my thinking’.” And apparently, there was a time where Disney even started casting for a fourth High School Musical with all new characters, which never ended up happening.
Efron will also have to convince fellow co-star Ashley Tisdale, too. The mom shared with Entertainment Tonight back in 2021 that she didn’t think she could ever reprise her role out of wanting to keep the legacy pure. “I just feel like I wouldn’t be able to really do that again and give it justice…It’s so good, and it’s like, for me, I would hate to ruin something that is perfect for that moment, and yeah, I don’t think I could go back to it,” she says.
Whether or not a fourth movie ever gets made, we will always have the OG trilogy to keep us happy. Once a wildcat, always a wildcat!
