A new trailer for the live-action Barbie movie gives additional plot details and we cannot wait

Get your rollerblades ready! Barbie is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2023, and we’ve just been given additional plot details for the live-action adaptation that hits theaters in July of this year.

It all starts with Barbie and Ken practicing their choreographed dance moves with all the other Barbies and Kens at a dance party until Barbie asks, “Do you ever think of death?” This naturally stops the other Barbies in their tracks. When Barbie’s feet go from permanent tippy toe to flat on the ground, she knows something really has changed. Barbie must choose between the heels of her current life or the brown leather Birkenstocks that will lead her to the Real World where she can learn the truth about the universe. You’ll love the road trip scene with Indigo Girls singalong as well as Will Ferrell as the Mattel CEO desperate to get Barbie back in her box.

The previous trailer gave us a glimpse into Barbie’s world.

The sure-to-be-unforgettable film was written and directed by Greta Gerwig, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken—we’re already looking to book tickets in advance. The cast list is stacked, including Issa Rae as “President Barbie,” Simu Liu as “Ken,” Michael Cera as a character named Allen, and America Ferrera as a “human,” among many others. There’s a lot of pink in Barbie Land, of course, there’s a mention of a “beach-off” challenge. We see Barbie and Ken spending time cruising around in the classic Barbie Corvette, there’s some dance club action, and it looks as though Barbie will meet some pretty important people (look for a cameo by Will Ferrell!).

The teaser trailer released earlier this year gave us a sneak peek.

The teaser trailer satirizes 2001: A Space Odyssey, slowly unveiling Margot Robbie as a towering Barbie doll in a prehistoric age before showing little girls smashing their baby dolls in favor of this fashionable, grown-up one. Then, it transitions into what looks like a montage of musical numbers. To say we’re excited about this movie would be an absolute understatement.

Back in June of 2022, Barbie producers gave fans sneak a peek of its star-studded lineup, including Margot Robbie, who is both producing and starring as the iconic, titular doll and Ken, played by Ryan Gosling.

At CinemaCon in April 2022, Warner Bros. shared a shot of Robbie in her infamous Barbie get-up and hot pink convertible, and a few months later, they revealed Gosling looking all sorts of Extreme Makeover for his part as Ken.

Fans have been reacting to his, um, look since the images became available:

In the viral pic, Gosling rocked a denim vest, platinum blond hair, a side smirk, and, lest we not forget, the peep of his underwear with “Ken” emblazoned on it. But Gosling isn’t the only hairless wonder. Fellow Ken Simu Liu described waxing his entire body to get ready for Barbie, saying it was “one of the most painful experiences of my life,” adding, “I have such a newfound admiration for the incredibly brave women who go through this on a monthly basis.” Bless.

For her part, Robbie is thrilled to bring some much-needed positivity to the big screen, especially being directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women and Lady Bird). “With that come[s] a lot of exciting ways to attack it,” Robbie told British Vogue. “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”

Barbie’s theatrical release is set for July 21, 2023.
