We’re finally heading back to Pandora. After 13 years of waiting, James Cameron’s newest Avatar film is getting ready to hit theaters!

Avatar: The Way of Water takes place 14 years after the first movie and follows the Sully family: Jake, Neytiri and their children. Major plotlines have not yet been revealed, but from the trailer, we can glean that it centers around a new series of battles and how they will fight to keep their family safe.

The film shows a return to the beautiful planet that hasn’t been razed, along with a focus on the water that wasn’t highlighted in the first flick. We also get a few peeks at some magnificent-looking water creatures.

One definitive difference from Avatar is the appearance of humans and Na’vi standing alongside each other. Not only that, it appears some roles have switched, with natives toting guns and humans living off the grid in the forest with bows and arrows.

To get fans excited about the upcoming film, Walt Disney Studios has announced that the OG Avatar will be re-released in theaters on Sept. 23 in all its colorful glory.

Uber fans might already know that this new film is just the first of four total sequels to be released in the coming years. The subsequent movies will be released biannually in 2024, 2026 and 2028.

So who’s joining the human and Na’vi family? That would be returning castmates Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver (we aren’t sure how that will work since her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, literally died in the first film), Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder and newcomers Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way of Water will debut in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022. Hopefully, we’ll get a few more trailers packed with details before then.
