When Families Travel by RV, The Journey Becomes the Destination

Trending Now

It’s the time of year for planning summer getaways if you’re not already making them. And because time away with the family is so precious these days, many parents go to a lot of trouble planning elaborate family trips that often include expensive air travel, extended hotel stays, and visits to theme parks or other popular attractions.

Unfortunately in many of these vacation scenarios, families lose valuable connection and relaxation time to the stresses that come with travel. Arriving at the airport on time, waiting in long security lines, enduring the cramped conditions and all the other drama that makes air travel so unpleasant can really suck the joy out of family adventures. Plus, the travel time to and from the destination takes valuable time away from actual vacationing. When you consider this all, it’s no wonder the phrase, “I need a vacation from my vacation” so often rings so true.

But what many parents don’t realize is that there’s a better way to vacation as a family. One that allows for bonding, shared memory-making and relaxation to all happen simultaneously, free from the stresses that accompany other forms of family travel. In this scenario, the trusty RV becomes a family’s new home away from home and a portal into a whole new world of family fun.

Take a Road Trip in an RV

American families have been traveling in RV’s together since cars became widely available at the start of the 20th century. And for many people, family camping and road trips are the sources of cherished traditions. But what is it about this type of vacation that creates such memorable experiences? It’s because when you travel by RV, the journey becomes the destination.

And when it comes to journeys, nothing quite matches the romance of traveling the United States by road. This country was built to be connected by its highways, and traveling along them allows you to connect more deeply to the landscapes you pass through. Air travel makes the earth below seem distant and almost abstract. But during a road trip, you’ll come face-to-face with the diverse people and places this country has to offer. And these first-hand experiences bring valuable lessons all their own.

Plus traveling by RV allows families to take in these experiences at a more relaxed pace. There’s no rushing to make a connecting flight in some unfamiliar airport. Instead, you’ll have the freedom to set and change your itinerary on a whim to explore a new back road, experience some local curiosity, or linger in your latest favorite place in the world. In an RV, your destination and your home are always in exactly the same location.

Connect with the Natural World with All the Comforts of Home

Traveling in this fashion also gives families the unique opportunity to combine the fun of outdoor camping with the important conveniences of home. There are a wide network of campsites throughout the country where you can park your RV, access running water and electricity, and still be just minutes away from nature.

Then, after a long day of hiking, swimming, and exploring, the entire family can retreat back to the warmth and comfort of their road home for a hot shower, a home-cooked meal, and plenty of family bonding around the campfire.

Unlike most hotel rooms, an RV offers plenty of room for a family to stretch out in their own personal spaces without crashing into each other at every turn. With an RV, gone are the days of killing time while you wait to check into a hotel or rushing to pack so you can check-out on time because your means of travel becomes your comfortable home-away-from-home.

RV Travel is Flexible, Affordable & Fun

Of course not every family can afford to buy, store, and maintain their own RV. But that doesn’t mean they have to miss out on all the fun. Companies like Allstar Coaches rent RV’s and motorhomes to the public. And after a quick walk-through, you’ll be free to drive away in your new temporary home and begin your next adventure on your family’s terms.

And when you travel by RV, the high cost of air travel and hotel accommodations are no longer necessary. Plus, with a proper kitchen, you’ll avoid all those expensive restaurant meals. In fact, many families find RV travel to be much less expensive than other kinds of vacations.

Most importantly, traveling by RV is just plain fun. You’ll see new sights, share exciting experiences, explore the amazing parts of the United States up-close and personal—all while growing closer as a family. And you’ll do it from the comfort of a flexible and affordable RV. That sounds like a pretty great way to spend these precious warm days.

Spending years on the road touring with my band led me to discover new places, cultures and cuisines. My current role owning RV rental company, Allstar Coaches, matches my desire to help people experience places, rather than just seeing places. I am happily married with two children.
